A recent injury casts doubt on Nick Kyrgios's ability to compete in the Australian Open
Nick Kyrgios has encountered another injury roadblock after an abdominal pain forced him to withdraw from a scheduled exhibition match with Novak Djokovic; the Australian Open starts on Sunday, January 12.
A withdrawal from an exhibition match due to an abdominal ailment has cast doubt on whether or not Nick Kyrgios will be able to compete in the Australian Open.
Even though she had not competed in a singles match since October 2022, the player who had reached the final of Wimbledon 2022 made his comeback to the circuit last week in Brisbane.
The 29-year-old individual said that an ultrasound had shown a grade one strain when he made the announcement of his withdrawal on Instagram.
"I will be resting and doing everything I can to be okay by the time the Australian Open begins on Sunday," he said before the tournament.
Although he was defeated by France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in three tie-break sets in his first singles encounter in Brisbane, he said that he "felt like I had been hit by a bus" after the match. However, he was able to advance to the second round of the doubles competition with Novak Djokovic.
"I think I almost need a miracle, and I need the stars to align for my wrist to hold up in a grand slam, for sure," he stated after his singles match was unsuccessful. "I need the stars to align."
"It's completely new territory for my wrist at this point. It hurts a lot...that was something we were anticipating. At this point in the trip, today is yet another stepping stone.
